Pinoy Money Talk is hosting an SEO contest. One of the blogs I read regularly is pinoy money talk. I’ve been doing SEO for a little while, and I thought this would be a great way to test my skills. I’ll be happy even if I come in second :) Plus, I’ve always wanted to start a Pinoy frugality and personal finance blog, and the Pinoy Money Talk contest gave me the opportunity to do just that.

True, I could’ve just entered with any of my existing blogs (Pimp Your Work is a Google PR5 blog, and I own many others). However, I don’t want to create an out of place blog post just for the sake of entering. Also, I really wanted to start Frugal Pinoy once and for all.

So this post is actually my pinoy money talk entry.

Now, the prize is $75, which makes a personal finance fanatic like myself happy.

What am I going to do with the $75?

That’s P3,000 pesos! Most people might think of doing the following things:

  • buying a new cellphone, or at least saving up for a new cellphone
  • give their friends ‘balato’ by treating them out or buying them drinks
  • buying a new MP3 player (or some other gadget)
  • and so on.

Know what I would do with the P3,000 if I win?

I’d add it to my emergency fund.

An emergency fund is a “security blanket”. In case there are unexpected financial emergencies like home or vehicle repairs, medical expenses, etc., it’s the emergency fund that’s going to save you from financial ruin.

It’s not the same as savings, per se, but it’s a type of savings. It’s supposed to be spent - but only for emergencies such as the ones I mentioned above. And no, a new cellphone is not an emergency.

If you were to win P3,000, what would you do with it? Feel free to discuss it in the comments.

Pag nabayaran mo na mgautang mo, I suggest na mag build-up ka ng emergency fund. Mas maganda na yung may pondo ka sa banko for emergencies kaysa sa mangungutang ka. Sobrang natulungan ako ng emergency fund ko in the past.
